about

Upon reaching the shores of Rogue's Landing and docking my nearly destroyed dinghy, I was anxious to find my way up the beach to gain some local insight on the best route to Storm Haven. I gathered my provisions and began walking toward the village where I could hear a distinct sound I'd not heard in quite some time. Floating above the ramblings of sailors and fisherman the high pitched pluck of a wooden lap harp began to stir my memories. Then came the yell of a familiar voice. Louder and louder, yelling "Ingsie! Hey Ingsie!" As I surveyed the docks I saw a cloaked figure sitting at a table near the start of the planks drinking from a tall tankard as he waved at me. Where as I neared, I saw his beard dripping with ale, reminding me instantly that I did in fact know this man. It was the bard Naginah of the Sombre Arcane!

"Hello my friend!" I said, "What in blazes are you doing here?"

He set his ale down next to his kantele and stood up to shake hands. "Oh it's a long story and believe me, even you of all people might have a hard time believing it!" he exclaimed. "But the short of it is, I'm actually getting off of this island! Need to get back to the mainland!" he said as he pointed wide across the bay at the fishing boats.

I pulled up a barrel and sat down with him at the table where I was met by the smell of what appeared to be his dinner sitting on a plate. I looked questioningly at him.

"Oh that was a platter one of the young chefs brought me for playing my tales over at the Swig & Swagger" he explained. "The kid has a ways to go," he added as he took another large drink, creating a waterfall of ale down his beard.

I pushed the plate away and continued to pry, "well at least we know the ale is safe!" I smiled. "It's good to see you again Naginah! But tell me old friend, what brings you this far from home?"

He looked at me and then looked around to see if any unwanted ears were listening. "It's good to see you too Ingsmith. Now listen, I can't tell you why I came here, but I can tell you why I'm leaving," his voice lowered to a whisper. "First, you can't tell anyone you saw me. I've been using a false name since I left the city and trying to play as little as possible, unless it involves coin to escape..."

He looked around once more as I asked "escape?" I suddenly became on guard and looked around at all of the passing dock workers. "Are you in some kind of trouble?" I said as I removed my dagger and set it into position on the table.

He looked down at the blade. "No no no, put that thing away!" He whispered. "Look, I kind of got myself into a fix...of a different nature." Sitting back and relaxing in his chair, he went on. "I was playing a game of cards at the Tipsy Waltz Inn and, well..." He paused and crossed his arms, looking up at the storm clouds rolling in from the sea. "Have you ever heard of Queen Kettuäiti?"

I shook my head no as he leaned forward. "Well, she's a sly one, she is! Captain of a Storm Sail with a red fox by her side, all the time! She's one of those marauders you hear about ransacking ships in the North. I had been playing the Tipsy for a few nights. At the end of each night I'd have a drink with her and play some cards." He paused to sip from his nearly empty tankard waving to someone on the beach, to bring a refill I presume. "Of course I didn't realize who I was getting mixed up with at the time. Much less a wild pirate queen!" He said as he picked up my dagger and drew some slashes in the air. "Anyhow, one night she was on a roll. Took me for everything I had made that day. So on the last hand she wagered a different kind of deal. Knowing I didn't have enough coin to cover a loss." He looked into his cup as he shook his head. "Now I know I should’ve have known better. But mind you, I was pretty well sauced." He removed a torn page from his belt pouch which after turning it toward me I immediately recognized as a page from the Code of Thieves. He drew closer to the table and pointed at a small section near the bottom of the page. "There!" he said, with a matter of fact tone.

I found and read the boldly written words aloud. "The Bond Beholden?" I looked up at Naginah.

"Yep! She got me good!"

It meant that, in this case anyway, Naginah was betrothed to Kettuäiti. And being such a highly ranked thief, I suspected she was not incredibly happy about her missing prize.

Taking the page and placing it back by his side, Naginah began to pluck once again on the kantele as a young damsel walked up and set two tankards down on the table. I nodded and handed the girl some coin. Looking back to Naginah, I quietly raised my cup. "Let me guess...You slipped out in the middle of the night and now she's tracking you down?"

He nodded just as the young serving girl returned and handed a guitar to me. Naginah smiled, "I might of mentioned who you were when I saw you hit the docks..."

I thanked the girl and began tuning. "Of course." I laughed, as I began to pluck the strings.

There on the docks we stayed for another couple hours as the grey light faded to black. Writing and playing the notes that would become the anthem for the Code of Thieves. Where finally, by the torch light of a very late midnight, we finished the song, transcribed and all. Just as quickly as the song had been written, so was Naginah gone. Gone into the darkness of the Sunless Sea as he set sail with a cask and cargo crew, headed back to the mainland and the shores of Rogue's Port.

As for me, I managed to find an empty bed via the Swig & Swagger where a welcomed wisher wheat pillow awaited my tired head, still echoing with the newly crafted song. "Perhaps I should better acquaint myself with the code before I reach Storm Haven." I thought to myself as I studied the map I had received in Winterstead. Charting my path, it looked like the best and safest route for me was to take the dry lands. Along the road which is commonly populated by beggars and drunks and merchants also known as the Wandering Path. Which I imagine may have more meaning to its name than just its denizens...

When morning light arrives, I intend to find out.
